ANNUAL REPORT OF THE HONY. SECRETARY FOR THE YEAR 2007-08

I am pleased to place my report for the period ended on 31st March, 2008. During this year, we conducted State Boxing Championships for Seniors, Juniors, Sub-Juniors and Senior Women and send teams of deserving boxers in various All India/National events.

We wanted to conduct our 32nd Senior Gujarat State Boxing Championships on July 15, 2007 at Indoor Stadium, Rajkot, but it was cancelled due to protest from Boxers of Ahmedabad against Boxers from Surat as some of them were from out of Gujarat. Though we assured them that we will not allow any outsiders in this Championship, they did not agreed and demanded to suspend the entire Surat team. The demand was not acceptable and therefore at the request from the Organizers, the championship was cancelled.
Then we conducted our State Boxing Championships for all groups at Ahmedabad from 7th to 9th Sept. 2007 wherein boxers from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Gandhinagar and Surat took part as under.
Sub-Juniors                    Juniors             Seniors          Sr. Women                TOTAL
      Boys                           Boys                 Men
       40                               13                    44                    17                        114

The Championships were conducted with the help of local qualified Officials and also we invited three Ring Officials from Mumbai to avoid any injustice to any boxer. Teams for the Nationals were selected from the winners of this Championship.

Nine Boxers were send to participate in the 6th West Zone Boxing Championship held at Bhusawal, Maharastra from 28-30 Sept. 2007 wherein our One Boxer has won Silver medal and Three Boxers won Bronze medals. Five Boxers were send to participate in the 15th All India A. K. Mishra Memorial Boxing Championship held at Chandigarh from 26th to 30th Dec. 2007.

Six boxers were selected and send at Delhi to participate in the Senior National Boxing Championships held from 25-30 August, 2007. Though we wanted to send our team for Junior National held at Warangal and we had booked railway tickets also for 3 Boxers and One Coach-cum-Manager, the parents of these boxers were not ready to send them due to exams, so we cancelled the tickets and no one participated from Gujarat.

Six boxers were selected and send to Golaghat, Assam for the Sub-Junior National Boxing Championships held from 17-22 February, 2008. Out of six boxers, Two Boxers won Silver medals and One Boxer won Bronze medal.Senior women team were not send as all the girls were below standard (Totally fresh boxers). For Sub-Junior and Junior girls, no one came forward to participate in our State tournament.

Since Gujarat has only One Boxing Coach, we are not getting good result. Gujarat Government is also not taking any interest in this game. It is only Federation, who can take up the matter with S.A.I. and depute some more coaches to improve the standard of our boxers.

I would like to thank the organizers of Rajkot and Ahmedabad for organizing Boxing tournament successfully. I also thank the Department of Sports, Gujarat for providing the services of his qualified Boxing coach for training and conducting State Championships. My sincere thanks to Office bearers of the IABF, our President Mr. Devendrasinh Solanki and the members of our Association for their continued support, cooperation and goodwill.
